The rule in Louisiana

To end a month-to-month tenancy in Louisiana, the notice period is 10 days, set by La. Civ. Code art. 2728. The words: “ten calendar days before the end of that month.” The same period binds the tenant: the statute gives landlord and tenant one rule.

Of the 29 states verified on this site, 1 requires less notice and 27 require more, counting a month as 30 days for comparison; the median is 30 days. No other verified state uses the same length.

Worked date: a notice delivered on November 10, 2026 runs its 10 days on November 20, 2026. Because the statute ties the end to a rental period, the earliest date the tenancy can end is the next rent day, December 1, 2026, which is 21 days after delivery.

The day of delivery matters where the end must fall on a rental date. To end the tenancy on January 1, 2027, the notice has to arrive by December 22, 2026; one delivered a day later, on December 23, 2026, runs to the following rent day, February 1, 2027, 40 days away. These dates assume rent is due on day 1 of each month, which the lease can change.

Louisiana has no land neighbours; the closest figures in the ranking: North Carolina requires 7 days, Wisconsin requires 28 days and Arizona requires 30 days.

Article 2728 sets the timing for every lease term: thirty calendar days before the end of a period longer than a month, five calendar days for a term of at least a week but less than a month, and any time before the end of a shorter period.

A notice that names no date ends the lease at the end of the first period for which it is timely.

Giving or receiving notice

The statute sets the shortest period; a lease can add conditions such as a written form or a delivery method, and some cities add their own rules. The guide on ending a month-to-month tenancy compares how the verified states count the period.
