The rule in Vermont
To end a month-to-month tenancy in Vermont, the notice period is 60 days for a tenant in the first tier of occupancy, set by 9 V.S.A. § 4467(c)(1). The words: “for tenants who have resided continuously in the same premises for two years or less, at least 60 days after the date of the actual notice.” The section quoted addresses the landlord's notice.
Of the 29 states verified on this site, 26 require less notice and 0 require more, counting a month as 30 days for comparison; the median is 30 days. Delaware and Maryland land on the same length.
Worked date: a notice delivered on November 10, 2026 runs its 60 days on January 9, 2027, so the notice can name January 9, 2027 or a later date as the end of the tenancy, 60 days after delivery.
Given on the rent day itself, December 1, 2026, the same notice reaches its end on January 30, 2027, 60 days later. A period stated in days is the same length in every month.
The period grows with time in the unit: 60 days at first and 90 days after 2 years. From the same November 10, 2026 delivery that means January 9, 2027 (60 days) and February 8, 2027 (90 days).
Across the border, among neighbours with a verified rule: Massachusetts requires one month, New Hampshire requires 30 days and New York requires 30 days at first.
These periods apply to a no-cause termination "in the absence of a written rental agreement" where rent is payable monthly; after more than two years in the same premises the notice is at least 90 days. Written rental agreements are covered by § 4467(e).
After the notice: the landlord then has 14 days to return the security deposit (deposit rules), so a tenancy ending on January 9, 2027 puts the deposit deadline at January 23, 2027.

Giving or receiving notice
The statute sets the shortest period; a lease can add conditions such as a written form or a delivery method, and some cities add their own rules. The guide on ending a month-to-month tenancy compares how the verified states count the period.
